The District Chief Executive of Nanton, Rosina Zeinabu Abdul-Rahamani has assured to support farmers and community Members who have been hit hard by floods in the district.
The DCE’s pledge of support comes after Some Farmers in the Nanton District have lost their farms after the dam at Nanton-Kurugu, a farming community, burst its banks to wreak havoc on community members.
This has caused extensive devastation to farm crops, causing farmers to reel in pain after investing huge capital into their farms in anticipation of a good yield, only for it to be truncated.
The communities affected by the Nanton-Kurugu’s Dam spillover include Sando, Zogoo, Zogu, and Batanyili, causing the Communities’ dams to break through their banks, resulting in serious flooding.
For instance, the bridge on the main link road of Batang Yili has been badly damaged, exposing the road to floods, hindering transportation of residents, petty traders, and school children as they can no longer access it for agricultural, economic, and educational purposes.
Several Communities, including Batanyili, are currently cut off from the major communities in the district, such as Nanton, Tampion, and Nanton-Kurugu, after the link road has been destroyed by the floods.
Farmers who have been hit by the floods cry out loud for help from the government, NGOs, and Benevolent Groups and Individuals to ameliorate their plight.
Following this development, the DCE of Nanton, Hon. Rosina Zeinabu, has visited the affected farmers for a fact-finding mission and is taking steps to support victims.
Having identified the Nanton-Kurugu Dam as the cause of the floods in the area due to ‘shoddy’ work done under the previous administration under the auspices of the Ministry of Agric, the DCE has resolved to complete the project by ensuring that contractors who abandoned the work resume to site as soon as possible to complete it to benefit the people.
