‎Colombia End Ghana’s World Cup Dream with Hard-Fought Victory
‎Colombia secured their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a disciplined 1-0 victory over Ghana, whose campaign came to an end following another frustrating attacking display in Kansas City.

‎Jhon Arias’ first-half strike proved to be the difference in a match where the South Americans controlled proceedings for long spells and created enough chances to record a more comfortable scoreline.

‎Playing in challenging conditions with temperatures remaining above 30°C late into the evening, Colombia maintained their impressive tournament form and will now face Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-finals.

‎Ghana made a bright start and nearly stunned Colombia inside the opening minute when Thomas Partey’s long-range effort flashed narrowly wide of the post. However, the Black Stars’ promising beginning was quickly overshadowed by injury setbacks for both teams.

‎Colombia were forced into an early change after striker Jhon Cordoba picked up a groin injury, with Luis Suarez introduced from the bench. Ghana also suffered a defensive blow when right-back Marvin Senaya limped off with a hamstring problem, paving the way for Alidu Seidu.

‎The decisive moment arrived in the 14th minute. Suarez raced down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross to the far post, where an unmarked Arias calmly volleyed home after Seidu failed to track his run.

‎Despite falling behind, Ghana struggled to build sustained pressure. Antoine Semenyo came closest before halftime, seeing a shot deflected over the crossbar, while Colombia continued to threaten through Luis Diaz, Suarez and Johan Mojica, only for goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi to produce a series of impressive saves to keep the Black Stars in the contest.

‎Colombia remained on the front foot after the interval. Richard Rios, Gustavo Puerta, Diaz and Juan Fernando Quintero all tested Ghana’s defence, with Zigi once again standing out as Ghana’s best performer by denying several clear opportunities. Diaz also had a goal ruled out for offside.

‎Partey offered Ghana hope midway through the second half with another effort from distance that drifted just wide, but the Black Stars failed to generate the attacking momentum needed to force an equaliser.

‎The defeat brought Ghana’s disappointing World Cup campaign to a close. The Black Stars finished the tournament without registering a single shot on target in the match and managed only four shots on target across all four of their games—highlighting the attacking struggles that ultimately cost them.

‎Colombia, meanwhile, march confidently into the knockout phase after another composed performance and will now turn their attention to a Round-of-16 clash with Switzerland, knowing victory could set up a blockbuster quarter-final meeting with Argentina.

‎For Ghana, attention now shifts to rebuilding after another early World Cup exit, while Colombia continue their pursuit of a first-ever FIFA World Cup title.

The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has urged Ghanaians to use the country’s 66th Republic Day celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress and recommit to building a safer, more resilient, and compassionate Ghana.

In a Republic Day message titled “Beyond Numbers: 66 Years of Sovereignty,” Mr. Abdul-Salam said the anniversary should be more than a celebration of the number of years Ghana has been a sovereign Republic, stressing that it should also serve as a measure of the country’s growth, development, and advancement.

He noted that while Ghana has made significant strides over the years, the nation must also confront pressing challenges, particularly the recurring floods that continue to affect parts of the Greater Accra Region.

According to him, the annual flooding has disrupted lives, destroyed properties, and threatened livelihoods, adding that the country cannot afford to accept such occurrences as the norm.

Mr. Abdul-Salam emphasized that addressing the challenge requires collective responsibility through sound policy direction, effective implementation, and active citizenship anchored on patriotism, discipline, and environmental stewardship.

He expressed sympathy to families, individuals, and businesses affected by the recent floods, offering prayers for strength and resilience as they recover from their losses.

The NLA Director-General also commended President John Dramani Mahama for his swift directive to the Ministry of Finance to release funds to support flood victims, describing the intervention as a step in the right direction.

He, however, encouraged individuals, corporate institutions, and communities to complement government efforts by extending support to those affected.

Mr. Abdul-Salam concluded by calling on Ghanaians to let the Republic Day celebration renew their shared commitment to building a nation that is safer, stronger, and more united for future generations.

He also reminded the public to remain vigilant against fraudsters and scammers.
