Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Rallies Stakeholders to Restore Discipline in Senior High Schools

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has called for urgent and collective action to address the growing challenge of indiscipline in Senior High Schools (SHSs), stressing that discipline remains the bedrock of quality education and national development
Speaking at the opening of the National Conference on Stemming Indiscipline in Senior High Schools in Sunyani, the Minister challenged stakeholders with a thought-provoking question:
”If our schools cannot produce disciplined citizens, what kind of nation are we preparing for tomorrow?”
According to the Minister, the true purpose of education extends beyond academic achievement. He noted that while certificates are important, schools must also nurture integrity, responsibility, respect, and good character among students.
”Discipline is the foundation of quality education. A system that awards certificates without shaping character has only accomplished half its mission,” he stated.
Hon. Iddrisu expressed concern over the increasing incidents of indiscipline in schools, citing reports of students carrying firearms and narcotic substances onto school campuses, as well as recent assaults on teachers during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
He described these incidents as unacceptable and warned that such acts must not become the defining feature of Ghana’s education system.
The Minister recalled raising these concerns on the floor of Parliament, emphasizing the need for decisive interventions to safeguard the integrity of the country’s educational institutions and ensure a safe learning environment for both students and teachers.
He said the National Conference serves as a platform to bring together policymakers, education authorities, school heads, teachers, parents, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and other key stakeholders to develop practical and sustainable strategies to restore discipline in schools.
Hon. Iddrisu stressed that rebuilding discipline requires a shared commitment from families, communities, schools, and government, adding that value-based education must be central to shaping the next generation of responsible citizens.
He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the conference would contribute significantly to strengthening discipline across Ghana’s secondary schools and reaffirmed the Ministry of Education’s commitment to policies that promote academic excellence alongside moral and civic responsibility.
”This conference is a national call to action to restore discipline, strengthen our values, and ensure our schools produce not only academically excellent students but also responsible citizens for national development,” the Minister said.
The conference is expected to generate recommendations that will guide efforts to promote positive student behaviour, strengthen school governance, protect teachers, and reinforce character formation as an essential pillar of Ghana’s education system.

Former Tamale Great Eagles FC player, Alhassan Wakaso, has demonstrated his continued commitment to his boyhood club by donating football equipment to support the team’s activities.
The donation, which comprised two sets of jerseys and two sets of Stockings, were presented on Wakaso’s behalf by his elder brother, Bobby Rahaman, during the club’s training session at Kalandan Park in Tamale.
Receiving the items on behalf of Tamale Great Eagles FC were Sheikh Ahmed Tijani (Afa Tijani), a member of the club’s management team, and Sayibu Abdul-Nasir, a representative of the club’s Old Players Union.
Speaking during the presentation, Sheikh Ahmed Tijani expressed the club’s profound appreciation to Alhassan Wakaso for the generous gesture. He noted that the donation would significantly support the team’s preparations and motivate the players.
He also wished Wakaso continued success in his football career, praying that he remains healthy and achieves greater heights both on and off the field.
The donation reflects Alhassan Wakaso’s enduring bond with Tamale Great Eagles FC and his desire to give back to the club that played an important role in his football development.

PRANG, BONO EAST REGION – Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has praised the enduring legacy of the annual Maulid of the Eminent Sheikh Ahmad Tijani, describing it as a powerful platform for promoting spiritual growth, unity and selfless service to humanity.
Dr. Bawumia made the remarks after joining the Jallo fraternity and thousands of Muslims in Prang, Bono East Region, on Saturday night to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the revered Islamic celebration.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia said it was a distinct honour to participate in the golden jubilee celebration, which has grown from a modest community gathering into one of Ghana’s most recognised Islamic events.
According to him, the Maulid has, over the past five decades, become a beacon of Islamic teachings, fostering peaceful coexistence, strengthening communal bonds and inspiring service to humanity.
”What began as a modest community gathering five decades ago has today grown into one of the most recognisable Islamic events in our country, dedicated to spiritual guidance, advancing unity and promoting service to humanity,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia paid tribute to the pioneers of the annual gathering, applauding their vision and commitment to preserving the event over the years.
He also commended the organisers, Islamic scholars, community leaders and volunteers whose efforts have ensured the continued success and relevance of the celebration.
”Congratulations to the founding fathers of this Maulid, and to all who have played various roles in sustaining it and making it the impactful gathering it is today,” he added.
The Maulid of Sheikh Ahmad Tijani has become a significant event on Ghana’s Islamic calendar, attracting worshippers from across the country for prayers, Qur’anic recitations, religious lectures and reflections centred on peace, morality and national development.
Dr. Bawumia’s participation in the golden jubilee celebration highlights the important role religious institutions continue to play in fostering national unity, promoting moral values and strengthening Ghana’s social fabric.
