The Communications Director of NPP for the Northern Region, Yussi Danjummah, has condemned the decongestion exercise executed by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly led by the Mayor, Adam Abu Takoro, saying the NPP in the Northern Region is not in support of the exercise.

Mr. Yussif Danjummah noted that the Mayor is carrying out the decongestion exercise without applying a human face to the affected traders, underscoring the cruelty of the exercise being undertaken by the TaMA under the directives of the Mayor, Abu Takoro, in the name of decongesting Tamale.

Speaking on Sagani TV’s Weekend Political Discussion program, ‘Dakulo ‘Gbana, the Northern Regional Communications Director of NPP believes many small-scale businessmen and women will be pushed out of business, with their livelihoods hanging in the balance, if the Mayor does not halt the exercise.

He further questions why the Mayor has not put up alternative venues for the traders to operate but insists they vacate their spaces of operation, describing that as inhumane treatment, lack of empathy and compassion for the very people who gave the NDC the mandate to govern of which the Mayor is a direct beneficiary.

His assertions come in the wake of backlash from traders at the Tamale Central Business District including hawkers who are resisting the eviction and calling on the Mayor to stop the exercise to enable them to also consolidate their livelihoods to fend for their families.

The Mayor of Tamale embarked on a decongestion exercise last week, aimed at cleaning the City and opening it up for business opportunities. However, it remains to be seen whether the Mayor will succeed at that.

Meanwhile Mr. Danjummah also criticized NEDCo/VRA for carrying out night operations within some parts of greater Tamale as part of its revenue mobilization exercise, suggesting that it is unlawful exercise not backed by any law in Ghana.
