An 18-year-old Second Year Student of Bimbila Senior High School, Abukari Fatima was shot dead yesterday night, Saturday 5th July 2025 during the celebration of the Fire(Bugum) Festival in the Nanunba North District Capital.

In a disturbing video shared on Facebook by a Tamale-based Broadcast journalist, Abdul Mumin Abdul Razak Kurubari, captured her lifeless body with blood oozing around the body.

According to the Eyewitness account, she was hit by a bullet, piercing through her ear and killing her on the spot.

On the eve of the Fire Festival celebrations, the MCE of Nanunba North Municipality, Abdul Somed Hamza Ndibo, in a media briefing, took the pain to warn the youth against firearms during the celebration. Unfortunately, the youth failed to heed the call and acted contrary to the directive, resulting in the death of the student.

In recent times, the celebration of the Fire Festival in Nanung and Dagbon has been characterized by barbarism perpetrated by the youth, including the brandishing of weapons, the use of firearms, and the shooting of live bullets, among other uncouth behaviors incorporated into the Fire Festival Celebrations.

As part of measures to ensure an incident-free celebration of this year’s ‘Bugum’ Festival, the Overlord of Dagbon placed a ban on the celebrations within Greater Tamale and its adjoining communities after receiving a security briefing about heightened tension within the Metropolis due to violent clashes between youth groups.
