2025 Africa Cup of Nations to be stage in December after CAF Executive Committee meeting
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been confirmed to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, following a decision by the CAF Executive Committee during their meeting in Cairo, Egypt on Friday, June 21.
However, CAF is yet to make the official announcement after the meeting.
If CAF makes the announcement, it will confirm a previously speculated change in schedule aimed at avoiding overlap with the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled for June 15 to July 13 in the United States.
The rescheduling of AFCON aims to prevent scheduling conflicts with the global football tournament, which will feature 32 teams, including heavyweights such as Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, Al-Ahly of Egypt, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, and Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca.
Additionally, the shift moves AFCON from its traditional summer timeframe to the winter season in North Africa.
The last AFCON, hosted and won by Cote D’Ivoire with a 2-1 victory over Nigeria, paved the way for Morocco to secure the hosting rights for the upcoming edition of the continental championship.
