Former broadcaster Alima Bawah has called on the public to exercise restraint and protect the dignity of a student at the centre of a controversial leaked video allegedly involving a teacher of Bole Senior High School.
In a statement shared on her Facebook page, Bawah expressed shock over the allegations, revealing that she has personally known the teacher involved, identified as Arafat, since 2005.
According to her, the teacher is a former schoolmate with whom she has maintained contact over the years and whose character she has long admired.
”I personally know the teacher involved since 2005. He is a former schoolmate and we still keep in touch. Too gentle to a fault, patient, intelligent and respectful,” she wrote.
Bawah disclosed that her immediate reaction upon hearing about the incident was disbelief, saying she found it difficult to reconcile the allegations with the character she knew.
However, she stressed that personal familiarity and perceived good character should not be used to excuse any wrongdoing if the allegations are proven to be true.
”The good qualities do not excuse wrongdoing, nor do they diminish the seriousness of the allegations,” she stated.
While acknowledging the public outrage surrounding the incident, Bawah urged Ghanaians to focus on the welfare of the young student whose privacy and future could be severely affected by the widespread circulation of the video.
She warned that repeated sharing of the footage and related content only compounds the harm suffered by the student.
”Beyond the headlines and public commentary is a young girl whose dignity, privacy, mental health and future are at stake. Every forward, repost, screenshot and share extends the harm far beyond the original incident,” she noted.
Bawah further appealed to the public to avoid turning the matter into a spectacle, insisting that misconduct can be condemned without subjecting a young person to public humiliation.
”We can condemn misconduct without becoming participants in the public humiliation of a young person,” she added.
She concluded by calling for accountability through the appropriate legal and institutional processes, urging the public to prioritize justice and the protection of the victim over sensationalism.
The incident, which has generated widespread discussion on social media, continues to attract public attention as authorities are expected to investigate the matter and determine the appropriate course of action.
