Bawumia Mourns Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, Hails Late Dagbon King as Unifier and Champion of Peace‎

‎Former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the chiefs and people of the Dagbon Kingdom following the passing of His Royal Majesty Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.

‎In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia described the late Yaa Naa as a visionary leader whose reign brought peace, unity and stability to Dagbon during one of the kingdom’s most difficult periods.



‎”It is with grief that I send my sincere condolences to the Chiefs and people of the Dagbon Kingdom on the passing of Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II,” he stated.

‎Reflecting on the late monarch’s leadership, Dr. Bawumia said Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II ascended the Dagbon skin at a challenging moment in the kingdom’s history but, through wisdom, patience and exemplary leadership, guided Dagbon toward lasting peace, unity and prosperity.



‎He noted that although the King’s reign was relatively short, it was profoundly impactful, crediting him with uniting families, healing long-standing divisions and successfully blending tradition with modern leadership.



‎According to Dr. Bawumia, the late Yaa Naa consistently championed development initiatives that contributed to the progress of the Dagbon Kingdom.

‎The former Vice President also spoke of his personal relationship with the late monarch, revealing that he benefited immensely from the King’s counsel during his tenure as Vice President and later as the NPP’s presidential candidate.

‎”It was always an honour to pay him homage at the ancient Gbewaa Palace and to draw from his immeasurable wisdom and guidance,” Dr. Bawumia said.

‎He described the passing of the revered traditional ruler as a significant loss not only to Dagbon but also to Ghana as a whole.

‎Dr. Bawumia concluded by praying for Allah’s comfort and strength for the bereaved family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and the nation during this period of mourning.

‎”May Allah comfort his immediate family, the Chiefs and people of Dagbon, and Ghana as a whole. It is a painful affliction,” he added.Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.

‎Today, Dagbon mourns the departure of a remarkable King, father and custodian of our rich traditions.

‎I join my people of Dagbon and the entire nation in mourning the passing of His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II. As a proud son of the soil, I remain deeply grateful for his wisdom, guidance and the invaluable role he played in my personal growth. His reign brought dignity, stability and unity to Dagbon and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

‎May Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Jannatul Firdaus and comfort the entire Kingdom of Dagbon during this difficult time.
