Today as I mark 31 years at the Ghana Bar, I reflect on my life lessons in leadership from my mentor, lawyer and former President JEA Mills.

In July 2025, I had the honor of presenting a memorial lecture for Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, President of Ghana from 2009-2012. As his former student and mentee, I shared insights from his remarkable life as a man, teacher, and leader.

Here are 10 timeless leadership lessons from his legacy:

  1. Integrity is a Silent Superpower
In a noisy world, Prof. Mills proved that unwavering integrity speaks louder than words.
  2. Humility is Strength Under Control
“I will be President for all Ghanaians, whether they voted for me or not.” True power lies in humble service.
  3. Great Leaders Welcome Criticism
He once told me, “You were right, and I was wrong.” Power that fears criticism is already bankrupt.
  4. Leadership is Service, Not Privilege
“Real leadership begins when you lose the microphone.” He embodied servant leadership.
  5. Invest in the Next Generation
His greatest legacy was mentoring young people and nurturing their potential.
  6. Be an Active Peacemaker
He built bridges and fostered understanding, believing peace requires justice and mutual respect.
  7. Character Must Be Consistent
He was the same person in private as in public. “You can’t fake legacy; time always tells.”
  8. Demand Excellence, Provide Support
High expectations paired with unwavering support—the hallmark of effective leadership.
  9. Champion Inclusive Leadership
He actively created opportunities for underrepresented groups, especially young women.
  10. Lead with Faith and Perseverance
His deep faith gave him strength to overcome adversity and serve others with purpose.

Prof. Mills’ life reminds us that true leadership is about integrity, humility, and genuine service to others. His legacy challenges us to lead with character and lift others as we climb.
