Coalition of Unpaid Teachers: N/R GES Director labels their appointments as fake

By Inusah Dondaliya 23rd January, 2026

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mr. Alidu Junior has described the appointment of Teachers, – 2023 Cohorts, known as Unpaid Coalition of Teachers as fake, asserting that GES does not recognize and approve their appointments, neither consider them as staff.

The Northern Regional GES Director’s statement is in response to the 2023 Cohort of Teachers, who at press conference in Tamale demanded immediate release of staff IDs and payment of their 25 months’ salary arrears after working for long while without validation.

Speaking in an interview with Sagani news, Mr. Alidu Junior, stated that these people parading themselves as teachers are not on the master’s list of GES at the headquarters in Accra, neither approved by GES, bringing their recruitment process into question.

He further disclosed that some of the ‘teachers’ are victims of a syndicate who used to sell appointments within GES to interested individuals after hacking into the system. This, he affirmed that the supposed teachers have bought the appointments from unscrupulous people, failing to follow due process by applying through GES online portal, making their appointments invalid.

Mr. Alidu Junior said “They are not staff of GES because should I call it fake? They have not gone through the due process and must say that is like the system was like hacked. And they know how they had their appointments. But I can speak on authority, if you ask them and if they will open-up with you. Almost all of them bought the appointment”.

The GES Director further stressed that “GES realized that the recruitment process was highjacked, and people penetrated into the system and were doing a lot of things, per GES master’s list from headquarters and validations, we realized that their names were not part of this master list. So I remember when I took over, this issue came, and they were asked to even stop work. So for them saying they are working and up to now they are not paid to me I will say am not aware of that”.

Meanwhile, Mr. Alidu Junior indicated that the only way they could become teachers is to reapply and follow due process if GES reopens its portal for teachers recruitment.

Coalition of Unpaid Teachers demand payment of 25 months salary arrears from gov’t

By Inusah Alhassan

20th January, 2025

Coalition of Unpaid Teachers, 2023 Cohorts are calling on government through Ghana Education Service to release their staff IDs for them – an identification system recognizing that they are workers under GES.

They also demand immediate payment of their 25 months salary arrears from Government to enable gain a sigh of relief, and lessen their plight.

At press conference in Tamale on Monday, 19th January 2026, the Coalition of unpaid Teachers highlighted the difficulties they went through for the past 2 years in hands of GES with regards to regularization of their appointments but nothing seemed to be practicable after several appeals have not been heeded to by authorities.

They cited the delay in the release of the staff IDs, the ‘ghost’ financial clearance as key factors killing their spirit to walk into the classrooms and teach.

The unpaid teachers also recount how their integrity has come under attack after failing to settle debts of their creditors following the failure of government to pay them their monthly salaries.

Reading the Press to the media, the convenor, Mr. Ali Nathan said: “For nearly two years, the government released Staff IDs in a “consistent trickle” to keep us quiet. This was a weapon used to kill the thought of any protest, making each teacher believe their relief was “just next month” while leaving over 250 of us in financial ruin.
In March 2025, we were summoned to regional centers, including here in Tamale, to submit documents at our own expense. We spent our last borrowed funds only to be told the exercise was “not for us”. This was a soul-crushing mockery of our service.
In October 2025, a “financial clearance” was dangled before us like a ghost. Yet, months later, over 250 of us still have no IDs, no pay, and no future”.

Therefore, they are calling on the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, who once was a teacher and whom they believe share their plight to as matter of urgency work around the clock to address their concerns.

“Honorable Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu: Your appointment brought us immense solace. As a leader who has often championed the cause of the worker, we believed you were “one of us” and that our plight would be your priority because we know you were once a teacher. Even though our solace has turned into a nightmare, we believe you will immediately listen to our cry, show empathy and solve our problem”.

The development and production SHS 2 manual predate the appointment of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu – MoE

by Inusah Dondaliya – 17th January 2026

The Ministry of Education has refuted claims that the sector Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu authorized the introduction of Physical Education and Health (Elective) Teacher Manual for SHS Year, containing the definition of gender identity that is not reflective of Ghanaian norms and values.

This follows a publication by the Centre for Democratic Movement attributing the approval of the manual to Hon. Haruna Iddrisu as the Minister with oversight responsibility.

In a press statement issued today by the Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, Hashimin Mohammed, unequivocally denies the allegations, stating that the development and production of the manual predate the Minister, pointing out that it started way back in 2021 led by National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) with support from Transforming Teaching, Education & Learning (T-TEL).

The statement also indicated that the Ministry of Education in 2021 entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Transforming Teaching, Education and Learning (T-TEL) to provide technical advisory services, project management, research, and implementation support aimed at strengthening teaching and learning outcomes nationwide.

The statement further stressed that a rigorous process was used to identify and select over 300 Ghanaian professionals from secondary schools, Colleges of Education, industry and universities to write the curriculum and accompanying resources such as Teacher Manuals, Learner Materials and PLC Handbooks. The curriculum development process involved extensive stakeholder engagements before and during the writing and the trial phases.

Meanwhile, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has withdrawn printed copies of a Senior High School (SHS) teacher manual after acknowledging that certain content on “Gender Identity” in the Year 2 Physical Education and Health (Elective) Teacher Manual did not align with Ghanaian culture, norms, and values, adding that a revised version of the manual, reflecting national values and biological understanding, has now been released.

Below is the press statement:
