Education Minister, UDS Vice-Chancellor Discuss Expansion of Yendi Campus and Teaching Hospital

The Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating the development of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Yendi Campus.
The assurance was given on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, when the Minister received the newly inducted Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Professor Mohammed Muniru, for discussions on the future growth and transformation of the university.
A major highlight of the meeting was the accelerated completion of infrastructure at the UDS Yendi Campus. Hon. Haruna Iddrisu stressed that government remains committed to providing the necessary facilities to complete the campus in honour of the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, whose vision, advocacy and unwavering support were instrumental in the establishment and development of the campus.
The Minister noted that completing the project would not only preserve the late King’s legacy but also strengthen access to higher education and research opportunities in northern Ghana.
The discussions also focused on plans to expand the UDS Teaching Hospital to increase the training capacity for medical doctors and improve healthcare delivery across the Savannah Ecological Zone and the wider Northern Ghana region. The proposed expansion is expected to enhance clinical training while addressing the growing healthcare needs of communities in the area.
In addition, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu underscored the need to amend the recently enacted UDS Act to review the composition of the University’s Governing Council. According to the Minister, the amendment would ensure that the Council aligns with the new legal framework and promotes effective governance, accountability and the continued growth of the institution.

Bawumia Receives Dagbon Chiefs Following Ya-Na’s Passing

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has received a delegation of chiefs from the Dagbon Kingdom who officially informed him of the passing of Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II and the scheduled installation of the Regent.
In a statement shared on Thursday, Dr. Bawumia said the chiefs paid him a courtesy call to formally communicate the demise of the revered Dagbon overlord and the arrangements for the installation of the Regent in accordance with Dagbon tradition.
Reflecting on the late King’s legacy, Dr. Bawumia described Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II as a leader who served both Dagbon and Ghana with dignity, wisdom, and dedication.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the chiefs, and the people of Dagbon, praying for Allah’s mercy upon the late Ya-Na.
“Ndan Ya-Na served Dagbon and Ghana with dignity and wisdom. May Allah grant him Jannah and comfort the Royal Family, Chiefs and people of Dagbon,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
The passing of Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II has drawn tributes from across Ghana, with traditional authorities, political leaders, and the general public remembering his contributions to peace, unity, and the preservation of the rich cultural heritage of the Dagbon Kingdom.

Dr. Bawumia Rejects Prosecution in His Name, Calls for Charges Against NDC Organiser to Be Discontinued

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution of an organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Agona West, who is facing charges for allegedly publishing false news and making offensive comments about him.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia stated that he neither lodged a complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against the individual.
According to the statement, Dr. Bawumia made it clear that he does not support the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name over matters relating to speech.
The statement noted that throughout his public life, Dr. Bawumia has been subjected to insults and falsehoods but has consistently refrained from responding through the use of state power.
Instead, he maintained that the appropriate response to offensive speech is more speech, while truth remains the best answer to falsehood, rather than arrests, court proceedings, or what he described as “crushing bail conditions imposed on ordinary Ghanaians.”
Dr. Bawumia therefore urged the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to immediately discontinue the prosecution and any similar actions purportedly being undertaken on his behalf. He also appealed for the release of the accused so he can return to his family and livelihood.
He further stressed that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens, including political opponents, are able to express themselves freely without fear.
Concluding the statement, Dr. Bawumia said he forgives the young man, wishes him well, and encouraged all political actors to focus their efforts on addressing the issues that matter most to the Ghanaian people.

NLA Partners Fidelity Bank to Drive Digital Transformation of Lottery Operations

The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has announced the signing of a strategic partnership agreement with Fidelity Bank PLC aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of Ghana’s lottery industry.
Sharing the development on his official Facebook page, the Director-General described the partnership as a significant milestone in the Authority’s ongoing efforts to modernize its operations and improve service delivery across the country.
According to him, the collaboration will see the deployment of modern Point of Sale (POS) terminals to enhance the efficiency of the NLA’s operations, strengthen customer service, and position the Authority for sustainable growth.
Mohammed Abdul-Salam reiterated the NLA’s commitment to building a fully digital lottery ecosystem, noting that the initiative forms part of broader reforms to improve transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency within the lottery sector.
As part of the digital transition, the Director-General announced that effective 1st August 2026, all licensed Private Lotto Operators (PLOs) are expected to migrate from paper-based lottery operations to POS terminals, in accordance with the terms of their licensing agreements.
The move is expected to standardize lottery operations nationwide, improve real-time transaction monitoring, reduce operational inefficiencies, and enhance regulatory compliance.
The NLA believes the partnership with Fidelity Bank PLC will provide the technological support needed to successfully implement the digital migration while delivering a more convenient and secure experience for lottery operators and patrons.
The Authority says the initiative reflects its vision of leveraging technology to transform Ghana’s lottery industry into a modern, efficient, and transparent sector that contributes more effectively to national development.
