During a recent visit by the Ghana Amputee National Football Team to his office, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif expressed strong disapproval of the team’s approach to fundraising.
The minister criticized the Black Challenge for accepting external donations before consulting his office, a protocol breach that has stirred controversy. The criticism comes in the wake of the team’s recent triumph at the 2024 Amputee Africa Cup (AAFCON) in Egypt, where they secured a 2-1 victory against Morocco in the finals.
Despite this remarkable achievement, the team’s fundraising efforts, particularly a $10,000 donation from ex-President John Mahama, have drawn the minister’s ire. “Last year when you landed, you came here directly, this year you started from one place to another,” Minister Ussif remarked, highlighting the deviation from established procedures.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has since instructed the management of the Amputee team to provide a comprehensive account of all donations received.
The Ministry underscored that these donations are intended for the state and must be transparently managed.Amidst the administrative tensions,
The Black Challenge’s AAFCON victory remains a significant accomplishment for Ghana. Their success on the field underscores their dedication and talent, even as they face challenges related to financial governance and oversight.By:
