Kumasi, Ghana – Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting private participation in tertiary education following the commissioning of a new hostel facility at Wisconsin International University College in Kumasi.

The Minister made the remarks in a Facebook post after attending two separate engagements in the Ashanti Regional capital on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Iddrisu joined His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Transport, Hon. Amadou Konde, at a Requiem Mass held at St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica to pay their final respects to the late Mrs. Grace Poku, wife of the late Francis Kojo Poku of Poku Transport.

Expressing his condolences, the Education Minister prayed for the peaceful repose of Mrs. Poku’s soul and asked that her family be granted strength and comfort during their time of grief.

Following the funeral service, Mr. Iddrisu joined the management of Wisconsin International University College to commission a newly completed hostel facility aimed at improving accommodation for students.

He commended the role of private tertiary institutions in expanding access to higher education, promoting innovation, and creating opportunities for young people across the country, describing Wisconsin International University College as an important partner in Ghana’s educational development.

The Minister reiterated that the government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for private participation in tertiary education.

According to him, the recent amendment of Part I of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), through Act 1165, 2026, provides for the representation of private universities on the Governing Board of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

He noted that the amendment is expected to enhance collaboration, inclusiveness, and stakeholder participation in shaping the future of higher education in Ghana.
