LAWYER MOHAMMED MUMUNI ELECTED AS NORTHERN REGION’S COUNCIL OF STATE MEMBER

Former Foreign Affairs Minister and Consultant to Dagbon Constitutional Review Committee, Lawyer Mohammed Mumuni has been elected as the Council of State Member for the Northern Region.

The former MP of Kumbungu pulled 26 votes out of the 32 votes cast. He beat off competition from 3 other contenders( Adam Husein, Richard Adam Yakubu, and Abdul Raqib) to emerge victorious.

The election was held at the Regional Coordinating Council’s Villa in Tamale.

Given the outcome of the Council of State elections, Mr. Mumuni will be representing the Northern Region to council the the president on matters of National concern.

Hon. Mohammed Mumuni started his political ambition as an Assembly Member for the Yagrafong Electoral area in the Tolon–Kumbungu District Assembly. He also served for two terms as the presiding member of the assembly between 1992 and 1996.

In the December 1996 parliamentary election, he was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kumbungu constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress and retained his seat in the December 2000 parliamentary election.

He was thus MP for two terms spanning January 1997 to January 2001. He also served in the NDC government of Jerry Rawlings as the Minister for Employment and Social Welfare during the second term of his government, ending in January 2001. Mumuni was the running mate of John Atta Mills in the 2004 Ghanaian presidential election.

In February 2009, he was appointed by President Mills as the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, a position he continued to hold till 6 January 2013 when a new political cycle began.

Today, the veteran Lawyer found his way back to the governance structure, due to serving as an advisor to the president in his new role.
