The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has urged Ghanaians to use the country’s 66th Republic Day celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress and recommit to building a safer, more resilient, and compassionate Ghana.

In a Republic Day message titled “Beyond Numbers: 66 Years of Sovereignty,” Mr. Abdul-Salam said the anniversary should be more than a celebration of the number of years Ghana has been a sovereign Republic, stressing that it should also serve as a measure of the country’s growth, development, and advancement.

He noted that while Ghana has made significant strides over the years, the nation must also confront pressing challenges, particularly the recurring floods that continue to affect parts of the Greater Accra Region.

According to him, the annual flooding has disrupted lives, destroyed properties, and threatened livelihoods, adding that the country cannot afford to accept such occurrences as the norm.

Mr. Abdul-Salam emphasized that addressing the challenge requires collective responsibility through sound policy direction, effective implementation, and active citizenship anchored on patriotism, discipline, and environmental stewardship.

He expressed sympathy to families, individuals, and businesses affected by the recent floods, offering prayers for strength and resilience as they recover from their losses.

The NLA Director-General also commended President John Dramani Mahama for his swift directive to the Ministry of Finance to release funds to support flood victims, describing the intervention as a step in the right direction.

He, however, encouraged individuals, corporate institutions, and communities to complement government efforts by extending support to those affected.

Mr. Abdul-Salam concluded by calling on Ghanaians to let the Republic Day celebration renew their shared commitment to building a nation that is safer, stronger, and more united for future generations.

He also reminded the public to remain vigilant against fraudsters and scammers.
