Ras Mubarak Fire’s at Haruna Iddrisu’s Motion

Ras Mubarak, a former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, has strongly criticized Haruna Iddrisu’s motion in Parliament to remove four MPs contesting as independent candidates in the upcoming December 2024 elections.

Mubarak finds the motion irrelevant to the pressing concerns facing Ghana, particularly the need for a free and fair election

He argues that Parliament should prioritize holding the Electoral Commission accountable instead of focusing on MPs who won’t impact the electoral outcome significantly.

Mubarak highlights the country’s urgent issues, such as road accidents, illegal mining, and environmental degradation, which he feels have been neglected

The former MP also questions why the motion doesn’t target larger issues like impeaching President Akufo-Addo for governance failures or addressing the bias of the Electoral Commission. In his view, the NDC should be focused on regaining political power in a challenging election rather than pursuing motions with little political gain

Haruna Iddrisu’s Motion A Waste of Everyone’s Time.

A decision on a motion in Parliament by the former Minority Leader to remove some four MPs who are contesting as independent candidates in the December 2024 Parliamentary election was deferred by the Speaker of Parliament.

While we await the decision of the Speaker, I must say the motion was a bizarre and shocking frolic that completely ignores the most pressing issues in the country.

Members of Parliament who spoke in support of the motion completely ignored one of the issues high up on the minds of Ghanaians yearning for a credible election in December – how to reign in the intransigent Electoral Commissioner and getting her to produce nothing but a free and fair election on 7th December.

That should be the priority of every elected Member, especially those in opposition. What is the electoral fortune of the motion?

With almost seven weeks to the December election, how does removing four rogue MPs revolve the issue of the Electoral Commissioner’s adamant posturing?

It doesn’t in any significant way clip the wings of President Akufo Addo, who should have been impeached by now.

We have had almost 1,500 Ghanaians die in road accidents In the first quarter of 2024 alone according to public records. The country had recorded nearly 10,000 injuries from road accidents within the first six months of this year.

It is a major disaster that requires serious and urgent action by all stakeholders, including Parliament, which ought to enact the necessary legislation to stem the tide, and appropriate the necessary funds to deal with the crisis.

There’s also the wanton destruction of our water bodies, forest reserves and a plastic pollution crisis, plus President Akufo Addo’s government running the economy aground.

And the first act by the Minority is not a motion to impeach the President for his colossal failure to tackle the illegal mining crisis, nor a bill to prosecute parents like Bishop Salifu Amoako, whose minor children commit high crimes.

Practicality and common sense dictates that the NDC and its MPs must be focused on reining in the Electoral Commissioner, whose posturing and impunity is very worrying.

Parliament Approves $300 Million World Bank Facility to Transform Secondary Education

Parliament has approved a US$300 million credit facility between the Government of Ghana and the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank Group to support the country’s secondary education sector.

The financing will be used to implement the Secondary Education for Transformation for Access, Relevance and Results for Jobs Project, which seeks to expand access to quality secondary education while improving learning outcomes and employability.

Presenting the Finance Committee’s report to the House, Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Isaac Adongo, explained that the facility is designed to increase equitable access to secondary education, eliminate the double-track system, and enhance the quality and labour-market relevance of both secondary and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes.

According to him, the project will help strengthen Ghana’s education system by ensuring that students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to meet the demands of the modern job market.

Following the approval, the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, expressed appreciation to Parliament for endorsing the agreement. He noted that the funding would play a significant role in strengthening Ghana’s education system and advancing the government’s efforts to provide accessible, relevant, and quality secondary education for all.

The approval marks a major investment in Ghana’s education sector and is expected to support ongoing reforms aimed at improving infrastructure, expanding access, enhancing teaching and learning, and better preparing students for employment and national development.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku Completes Permanent Move to Ipswich Town

Ghana international winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has completed a permanent transfer from Leicester City to Ipswich Town, signing a five-year contract with the newly promoted Premier League club.

Ipswich Town confirmed the signing on Monday, announcing that the 22-year-old has joined the club for an undisclosed fee after successfully completing the transfer from Leicester City. 

Fatawu, who impressed during his spell at Leicester and represented Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is expected to add pace, creativity, and attacking flair to Kieran McKenna’s side as they prepare for the new Premier League campaign.

Sankara Nationals FC Appoint Abubakari Nassam as New Head Coach

Sankara Nationals FC have officially announced the appointment of experienced tactician Abubakari Nassam as the club’s new Head Coach ahead of the 2026/27 Access Bank Division One League season.

The Yendi-based club confirmed the appointment in an official statement, expressing confidence that Coach Nassam’s vast coaching experience will strengthen the team’s ambitions for the upcoming campaign.

Coach Nassam joins Sankara Nationals after successful spells with both the men’s and women’s teams of FC Samartex, as well as Steadfast FC. His experience across different levels of Ghanaian football is expected to provide the technical leadership needed as the club prepares for another competitive Division One League season.
