Sankara Nationals FC made history on Monday morning by hosting the first-ever Division One football match in Eastern Dagbon at the Yendi Youth Resource Centre.

The team celebrated this milestone with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Wa Power FC, courtesy of Slyvester Biyandail’s decisive 85th-minute goal.

The match, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed due to heavy rain. Nevertheless, the wait was worth it, as Sankara Nationals’ midfield maestro Mohammed Salis delivered a stellar performance, earning him the MVP award.

After a 1-1 draw against RTU in Tamale to kick off the 2025/2026 Access Bank Division One League, Sankara Nationals now sit second in Zone 1A standings with 4 points.

Head Coach Mohammed Bashiru, also known as Joe Baah, praised his team for their achievement, acknowledging Wa Power’s skill and maturity. “Wa Power are a very good side with matured players,” he said. “We realized they were passing the ball well, but at this level, it’s not about possession – it’s about securing those 3 points.”

Sankara Nationals will now turn their attention to Yapei United on Saturday 11 October at Janapor stadium in Bupei.
