A renewed outbreak of violence in Odomi, a community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, has left three people dead and nine others injured following a gun attack by unidentified assailants.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening when armed men reportedly invaded the community and opened fire, causing fear and confusion among residents.
The injured victims were rushed to the Nkwanta St. Joseph Catholic Hospital for medical attention. Hospital sources confirmed that one victim died while receiving treatment, while two others were pronounced dead on arrival after reportedly being attacked on their farms.
Security agencies have launched investigations into the attack, but the identities of the perpetrators and the motive behind the assault remain unknown.
In response to the incident, police officers, supported by military personnel, have intensified patrols within the municipality to maintain law and order and prevent any retaliatory attacks.
The latest violence comes barely a week after the Oti Regional House of Chiefs announced the formation of a seven-member mediation committee tasked with finding a lasting solution to the protracted conflict in the area. The committee is yet to be inaugurated but is expected to engage key stakeholders and recommend measures to restore peace.
