‎Cape Coast, June 14, 2026 – The University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Ghana Police Service have launched investigations into the death of a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student whose body was discovered at Hutchland Beach near Duakor in the Cape Coast Metropolis.

‎According to information released by the University, police received a report at about 6:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026, from residents of the Duakor community that a body had been washed ashore along the beach. Officers immediately visited the scene to verify the report and commence preliminary investigations.

‎The body was subsequently conveyed to the mortuary at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for preservation and identification. Initial examinations conducted at the scene reportedly found no visible signs of physical injury.

‎Investigators later received information suggesting that the deceased was a student of the University of Cape Coast. The university’s Dean of Students’ Affairs was notified and assisted with the identification process and related administrative procedures.

‎The deceased has been identified as Inocentia Atsuful Avinu, a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student. Her identity was confirmed after her roommate, with whom she shared accommodation at a private hostel in Amamoma, provided police with a photograph that aided investigations.

‎According to the roommate, Avinu was last seen two days before the discovery of her body. She reportedly received a phone call, left her room around 7:00 p.m., and did not return. Concerned colleagues and friends later attempted to contact and locate her, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.

‎On Saturday, June 13, the family of the deceased visited the police station and formally identified the body at the mortuary. Family members also confirmed that they observed no visible injuries on the body, consistent with the initial findings of investigators.

‎Police have indicated that a coroner’s form will be obtained to facilitate a post-mortem examination aimed at determining the exact cause of death and providing clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

‎Authorities have appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information about the case, warning that speculation could hamper investigations and cause additional distress to the bereaved family and the university community.

‎The University of Cape Coast has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that support is being provided to the family, roommates, classmates, and other affected students as investigations continue
