The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, has banned the 2025 Bugum Festival celebration in the Greater Tamale Environment.
The decision to ban the fire festival celebration follows the perceived rise of insecurity and tension within Tamale and other adjoining communities.
Speaking to the Secretary of the Gbewaa Palace, Abdul Rahaman Mohammed confirmed the ban on the Bugum festivities, stating that the decision was taken following intelligence briefings from the Regional Security Council.
Last week, a Member of the Youth Group, called Googlehood, was shot dead following a violent clash at Sabonjina, sparking tension in Tamale with people suspecting that some thugs could take advantage of the volatile situation and foment trouble during the fire festival celebration and create chaos if the celebration of the festival is allowed this year.
The Fire (Bugum) Festival Celebration will be marked on Saturday, 5th June 2025. The Fire Festival in Ghana, also known as Bugum Chugu, is a cultural celebration primarily observed by the Dagomba people in the Northern Region. It is a significant event marking the beginning of the Dagomba lunar new year. The festival commemorates a historical event: the search for a missing prince, where torches were used to find him in the bush.
