The traditional Authorities in the Northern Region have requested the President, John Dramani Mahama to rename the Tamale International Airport after the Gbewaa International Airport.

This follows the naming of the airport as Yakubu Tali International Airport by the Former President, Akufo-Addo under the erstwhile administration.

During visits to the revered palaces as part of his ‘Thank You Tour’ to the Northern Region, the Ya-Na, Nayiri and the Regent of Nanung appealed to the president to scrap off Yakubu International Airport and replace it with Gbewaa International Airport, a name symbolizing the spirit and representation of Mole Dagbani.

The naming of the Tamale Airport to Yakubu Tali International Airport did not go down well with the traditional authorities in the North with Ya-Na in an occasion petitioning the ex-president to reconsider the decision.

This proved futile as the King was ignored with the former president going ahead to institute the name as planned.

Having been apprehended by the decision as the former regime stood firm in reversing the decision, the chiefs have dimmed their fit to rekindle their wish before a new government that just came to power.

The request by the traditional Leaders sits well with NDC members who while in opposition campaigned to reverse the naming of Tamale International Airport after a Veteran Northern Politician from UP extraction, Naa Yakubu Tail.
