Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has appealed to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite behind the party and its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as preparations begin for the 2028 general elections.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 19, 2026, Dr. Acheampong acknowledged the disappointment that follows a fiercely contested primary election, noting that he could personally relate to the frustrations being expressed by former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong after both men unsuccessfully contested the NPP’s January 2026 presidential primaries.

According to Dr. Acheampong, the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections makes unity and reconciliation the most important priorities for the NPP if it hopes to return to power in 2028.

“Our party suffered a painful defeat in 2024. The single most important task before us between now and 2028 is to rebuild, to reunite, and to return to power,” he stated.

The Abetifi MP expressed concern over recent comments made by Kennedy Agyapong and his reported threat to take action against the party and certain individuals. While describing the former Assin Central MP as a loyal and influential member whose contributions to the NPP over the years are unquestionable, Dr. Acheampong urged him to channel his influence toward healing divisions within the party rather than deepening them.

He admitted that some individuals associated with Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, as well as his own, made disrespectful remarks about Kennedy Agyapong during and after the primary contest. He described such conduct as inconsistent with the party’s values and acknowledged that many members wished party elders had intervened earlier to curb the attacks.

However, Dr. Acheampong stressed that there was no evidence linking Dr. Bawumia to those comments or suggesting that he endorsed them.

“There is no evidence that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned, directed or endorsed those attacks,” he said, adding that the individuals involved were pursuing personal grievances rather than acting on behalf of the flagbearer.

Calling for reconciliation among all factions, Dr. Acheampong noted that heated exchanges occurred on multiple sides during the campaign and appealed for forgiveness and understanding among party members.

He emphasized that the future of the NPP should not be held hostage by personal disputes, insisting that Dr. Bawumia now represents the entire party and not just those who supported him during the primaries.

“Dr. Bawumia is now the candidate of all of us. He carries the mandate not only of those who voted for him, but of every member who voted for Ken, for me, and for the others who contested,” he stated.

Dr. Acheampong concluded by urging Kennedy Agyapong, his supporters, and all NPP faithful to “lay down the weapons of internal warfare” and work together to restore the party to power in 2028.

“Unity is not weakness. Unity is how we win,” he said.
